Ornamental perennial grasses - Easy and Ornamental Plants

Perennial grasses are often called ornamental grasses though not all perennial grasses fit into this billing.  However, many are quite lovely, and they all serve a purpose.  Whether it is to decorate a corner of your yard, or a corner of your vegetable garden, or as a lawn, these ubiquitous plants are sure to please.

Like many plants that return every year (or simply continue to thrive throughout the year), perennial grasses can be seeded either in spring or the fall.  With this added planting time, their cultivation is all the more enjoyable.

Yet why are ornamental perennial grasses so popular?  For one, they are low maintenance. Of course, at times you must ensure that the soil has proper drainage (a feat accomplished by adding rock, sand, or grit into the soil –preferably before seeding the area).  This is as most perennial grasses simply do not require a great amount of water.  Further, they don’t require many nutrients –in fact, they are easily burnt, so only a moderate amount of nutrients is necessary. 

Another attribute is hardiness.  These plants are able to sustain a lot of abuse from the wind and other forces, as will become obvious over the years (-disease and pests, for instance, simply cannot get through the defenses of most grasses).

These plants come in numerous varieties, sizes, and forms.  There are stringy round-shaped blades that will often grow long and even spindly, there are wide, sword-like short grasses, and everything in-between.  As well, their colors go from silver-white to a bluish white all the way to the common green that we are all so used to.

For golf fanatics, many of these species are perfect, not only due to their need for little water and their pest resistance, but also as they are so resilient to being crushed.  After being stepped on, these plants spring back to form in preparation for anything else that might ensue.

Moreover, with golf courses popping up from everywhere between Canada to Jamaica, it is especially helpful that these grass types are able to thrive in a vast range of soil types.  This includes semi-arid all the way to bog-like terrain (though the latter would have to entail plenty of drainage as aforementioned).  In addition to this, when the soil is less than ideal, it will also be enlivened by these plants.

Beyond this, it should be understood that these ornamental plants add beauty wherever they are planted.  This is possibly their greatest trait.  Not only to they offer succor to the eyes, but are comfortable to lay on (perfect for those with children), and some species even make a light rustling sound in the wind which may just surprise you.

Perennial grasses have been popular for many years and with great reason.  They will turn a tedious, uninspiring lawn or garden into something that will raise conversation and eyebrows.  With the right shopping these seeds can be achieved for a fair price, and will be exciting not only to plant, but to watch as it grows into a lawn to be proud of.
