Choose Stone for Your Retaining Wall

Among the more popular materials for retaining walls are stones.  Stones are nature's bounties.  They have been observed in mountain slopes, effectively preventing unwanted erosion and keeping elevated mounds well-supported.  There is no reason that they won't provide the same benefits as components for retaining walls.

Indeed, stone retaining walls are among the first choices of homeowners who wish to expand the space of their gardens by adding elevated platforms for their flowerbeds.  Not only will stones provide sturdy support, they are also capable of magnifying the aesthetic appeal of any landscape.  Stones can make your landscape look more organic, as if nature itself has crafted the walls in your garden.  This is an effect that is pretty hard to establish, yet stone retaining walls pull it off in a relatively easy manner.

This is also the primary reason why stone retaining walls are very popular among landscape designers the world over.  Stones give landscape artists a lot to play with in designing and building magnificent looking sceneries for backyards.  Additionally, stones are very easy to arrange, and rearrange if ever a different design is sought.  This flexibility is rare among materials involved with retaining walls, and stones provide the perfect option.

But stones are highly effective for one particular reason.  Their sheer weight makes them great gravity retaining walls.  Gravity retaining walls, as opposed to cantilevered and sheet pile retaining walls, ward off the ground's force by making good use of almost immovable objects, something that fits the description of stones.  Stones are placed in a manner that will make them lean towards the mound of ground to counteract the effects of gravity.  It will appear that the stones will be pushing the ground back, to prevent the latter from eroding.

Stone retaining walls have their share of disadvantages, however.  For starters, their weight can cause some problems.  Manually moving them would require a lot of physical effort.  Also, stones necessitate the usage of a lot of space.  The base they will provide is quite sizable, and is not really ideal for smaller environments.

Nonetheless, for areas that can accommodate them, and for homeowners who could afford the extra labor they demand, stone can easily, and quickly, prove their importance for your landscaping needs.  There are fewer materials sturdier than stones, and there are even rarer materials that can provide the elegant texture, the smooth colors and the unique ambiance that stones can bring to any environment.
