Ferns of the Tropical Rain Forest
Ferns, the first land plants that grow on all
the continents of the world except Antarctica, are classified into
10-12,000 species. Though most of the ferns are put under the broad
category of Tropical ferns, all the ferns in this category
do not necessarily need 'tropical' climatic conditions for their
growth. Therefore, Ferns are further distinguished into tropical
and subtropical varieties of ferns that have certain
distinguishable features that bring out the difference between the
two subcategories. One of the most conspicuous differences is that
while these ferns do not sustain extremely cold conditions, the sub
tropical varieties can survive in temperatures a few degrees below
zero.
If you decide to place your Tropical fern inside
the house, then place it where it receives medium light. Protect
the Tropical fern from the direct rays of the sun as it may cause
the burning of the delicate foliage. These ferns should be kept
evenly moist and should never be allowed to dry out completely. Do
not use cold water as it may damage the roots of the Tropical fern.
These ferns should be potted in soil that is high in organic
content and has the quality of retaining moisture. These ferns also
require adequate air circulation and therefore, should be placed
away from places that restrict air circulation. Tropical ferns do
not need generous amounts of fertilizer. In fact, small quantities
of fertilizer serve the required purpose of saving the plant from
pests.
Tropical ferns are easily distinguishable as
they are highly ornamental to look at. Owing to their attractive
appearance, Tropical ferns are widely used to decorate table
centers, as hanging plants in a basket and as indoor plants that
are planted in attractive pots and containers. These ferns are
beautiful in appearance, with certain species that look unique
because of the variety in the color of the leaves. Some of these
ferns have red and even blue leaves that really look enticing.
These ferns also vary greatly in their sizes with the heights of
the ferns ranging from 25 cm to a whopping 600 cm.
The reproduction of the Tropical ferns takes
place through spores, while certain species might also reproduce
through vegetative methods. Bird Nest Fern and Round Leaf fern are
the varieties of tropical ferns that are popular the world
over.
